Brownies, a bite of a sweet cake, a bit love story
Another Indonesian romantic drama feature film by a young and talented director, Hanung Bramantyo, will soon be released this year. Fans of Marcella Zalianty, Bucek Depp and Arie U. Kuncoro will be able to see their idols acting in the movie titled Brownies. The film is produced by SinemArt, which also produced Mengejar Matahari.
The theme is simple; its about love. Love with its bittersweet story becomes the hightlight that enriches the movie plot. The reason is quite obvious: A love theme always attracts more people to come to the cinema.
Mel (Marcella Zalianty), a copywriter in an advertising agency, has a life that is focused on her job. Although Mel is engaged to Joe (Philips Yusuf), Didi (Luna Maya), her close friend, question if Joe is really Mel’s kind of guy.
Later in the story, Mel finds out that Joe has been going out with another girl all this time. Then, Mel meets Are (Bucek Depp), a young artist who writes, own a book story, and makes brownies! Are even has a small brownies shop that Mel loves to visit. Are’s artistic attitude and Joe’s betrayal have clearly affected Mel’s life.
Brownies is the first Indonesian movie that is shot using Panasonic High Definition cameras, which results in a film that looks as if it’s recorded on standard celluloid film, while reducing production cost.

‘Laskar Pelangi’ : The Audacity of Hope
This is a movie adapted from a best-selling Indonesian novel. It tooks 40 days of filming on Belitung Island, Bangka Belitung province. Involving 12 local actors, it reportedly cost Rp. 8 billion. With all the efforts of transforming Laskar Pelangi (Rainbow Warrior) into a moving picture, will it satisfy readers’ imagination?
Laskar Pelangi, the novel, was written by Andrea Hirata in 2005, based on his own experiences. It is about an inspiring teacher and her ten students in the poverty-stricken Kampung Gantong in Belitung. The poor condition of their school building does not dampen their high spirits and hopes for a better future.
Two years later, the novel became a phenomenon in Indonesian literature. With its humanistic touch, Laskar Pelangi has sold more than 500.000 copies and has won the position of Must-Read Novel in every corner of the nations’s bookshops and media review pages. It has finally overcome the domination of teen-lit, chick-lit and even religious novels, the popular theme of today.
Andrea entrusted the filming of the story to the respected figures in the film industry, Mira Lesmana and Riri Riza, as producer and fim director. In July 2007, Mira and Riri started the pre-production, which took a year to finish. Together with scriptwriter Salman Aristo they decided to created a different scenario for the film.
