movie plot. The reason is quite obvious: A love theme always attracts more
people to come to the cinema.

life that is focused on her job. Although Mel is engaged to Joe (Philips Yusuf), Didi (Luna Maya), her close friend, question if
Joe is really Mel’s kind of guy.
Later in the story, Mel finds
out that Joe has been going out with another girl all this time. Then, Mel
meets Are (Bucek Depp), a young
artist who writes, own a book story, and makes brownies! Are even has a small
brownies shop that Mel loves to visit. Are’s artistic attitude and Joe’s
betrayal have clearly affected Mel’s life.
Brownies is the first Indonesian movie that is shot using Panasonic
High Definition cameras, which results in a film that looks as if it’s recorded
on standard celluloid film, while reducing production cost.

‘Laskar Pelangi’ : The Audacity of Hope
This is a
movie adapted from a best-selling Indonesian novel. It tooks 40 days of filming
on Belitung Island, Bangka Belitung province. Involving 12 local actors, it
reportedly cost Rp. 8 billion. With all the efforts of transforming Laskar Pelangi (Rainbow Warrior) into a
moving picture, will it satisfy readers’ imagination?
Laskar Pelangi, the novel, was written
by Andrea Hirata in 2005, based on his own experiences. It is about an
inspiring teacher and her ten students in the poverty-stricken Kampung Gantong

humanistic touch, Laskar Pelangi has
sold more than 500.000 copies and has won the position of Must-Read Novel in
every corner of the nations’s bookshops and media review pages. It has finally
overcome the domination of teen-lit, chick-lit and even religious novels, the
popular theme of today.
Andrea
entrusted the filming of the story to the respected figures in the film
industry, Mira Lesmana and Riri Riza, as producer and fim director. In July
2007, Mira and Riri started the pre-production, which took a year to finish.
